With Twitter being one of the biggest social media websites out there, it should come as no surprise that many businesses use Twitter marketing to spread the word about their company. Featuring over a hundred and forty million users, Twitter is an incredibly effective way to build a group of followers. However, doing so can be difficult, as using dated marketing techniques on Twitter is a surefire way to lose out on lots of potential customers. Instead, go with the times and employ some modern tactics!

1. Do not automate your Twitter

There is absolutely no better way to turn people off of what your company has to say than by automating your Tweets. Some companies will use software to automatically send recent blog posts to their Twitter accounts, but you should know that this is a very ineffective strategy.

Because people are well aware with the idea of automation, they tend to stay far away from it. If your Tweets are not hand crafted, people are not going to be interested, and that’s the bottom line. By using a live human to create your Tweets on a daily basis, you eliminate the risk of alienating those savvy enough to realize you’re just automating things.

2. Don’t be afraid of controversy

Although traditional advertising techniques involve the use of maintaining impeccable professionalism, all the top Twitter tips list will tell you the same thing: you need your Tweets to sound like a human casually wrote them. The reason for this is that people who use Twitter are generally more interested in things that sound like they could be a part of everyday conversation.

However, it’s important that you don’t be boring with your Tweets. Instead of stating a fact, you should question the status quo and try to spark discussions. Getting people to talk or debate about your Tweets is a great way to build buzz.

3. Follow relevant Twitter accounts

If you run a business that sells paper, consider following printer companies. Likewise, if your company rents out cars, you should consider liking things like Google Maps and other car-related topics. This is a good way of building a web of relevant information that followers can visibly see.

4. Get your employees on Twitter

A great way to add a personal touch to your company’s Tweets is to directly refer to employees in them. For example, if you have an employee who is in charge of the blog, consider writing a Tweet like this:
“Brand new blog post about elephants.Written by the famous @blogpostguy!”

This establishes rapport with customers and followers alike, and allows them to see that your company is not just a faceless entity.

5. Regularly reply to mentions

If someone mentions your company’s Twitter account in one of their Tweets, it’s a golden opportunity for you to reply and take advantage of the fact that they might not have been expecting you to reply. Not only does it generate more followers than most Twitter marketing techniques, but it shows people that you are a part of the Twitter community.
